I was positively aghast one morning on November 21 when an advertisement from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) came on the radio.

The advertisement promoting a laudable theme of responsible pet ownership runs on this line: if you don't sterilise your dog, she will bear you plenty of unwanted puppies.

But I grew horrified as I listened when a snobbish sounding woman dog owner with an accent to boot started to admonish her dog for getting impregnated by 'mixing with that stray mongrel'.
I couldn't hear the rest of it because the woman's voice was so distinctive. It was the only thing that registered in my mind.

It is a misnomer to think that strays comprise mongrels only. Pure-bred dogs are abandoned as well and they become strays running along the streets as homeless animals.

Because of Singaporeans' obsession with status, mongrels had not been widely accepted in the past. Due to the efforts of dog welfare organisations such as ASD, ALL, Noah's Ark Cares and SPCA, mongrels are only slowly - too slowly though - coming into their own.
It is certainly contradictory that in encouraging responsible ownership, the AVA advertisement appears to promote snobbishness among dog owners.

It is also ironical considering that the AVA is organising an event this weekend that involves dog welfare organisations, all of which are committed to rescuing strays, mongrels and abandoned dogs.
The AVA is doing a good job, finally taking a proactive and supportive role, in educating the public on sterilising pets to reduce the high numbers of unwanted and abandoned pets.
By taking it a step further, such as educating the public that regardless of its breed or appearance, a dog is a dog, the AVA will also increase the adoption chances of all dogs - mongrels included.
But in putting out education programmes or advertisements, it has to be careful on what other messages it could be sending. Unfortunately, in this case, the AVA has not been mindful and considerate in promoting the needs of mongrels, or strays for that matter. They are after all beloved dogs and pets as well.
I hope this is a genuine oversight rather than a calculated case of discrimination against mongrels.

I REFER to MR Ivan Micheal Pung‘s letter “Continue to believe in national service” (ST, Dec 1st)
I unfortunately cannot agree with what he wrote. Although I can say I love my country, but when it comes to national service I cannot forgive them for what happen to my brother.
My brother was only 19 year when about 2 months ago, he committed suicide .He was in army for more than a year, as a driver. He was involved in a traffic accident which caused a civilian motorist to be hospitalized.
A through investigation on our request to his camp had closed its case recently. This is to find out the reasons that might have led to his suicide, in which have a lot to do with the traffic accident, and the charging procedures of Mindef.
But to us, the man in charge of the investigations only told us because the accident involved a civilian that’s why it took them so long to charge my brother.
So I assume now all the army drivers don’t need to drive their army vehicles anymore because when they are on the road there bound to be thousands of civilians.
The accident was on August 23, 2005. After the accident, the army officer straight announced, he would be sent to Detention barracks. The charge was delayed to no further dates.

The Major in his camp was too busy as he was going overseas at that time to charge him.
Execution of his sentence was delayed recurrently on the basis of reasons that were left unexplained to my brother; he was only threatened with more than 10 days in the detention barracks by his superiors. He was also told that if he was charged, he will not have the chance to sign on with Mindef, his ROD would be extended, and he would be stated as Condemn personnel.
I and my family strongly felt that because of the on going stress given by his camp’s officers and superiors caused him to choose to end his young life.

The fact that the time between the traffic accident with the passing of changes to the person was unusually long. My brother worried with great anxiety. Only during the weekends was he home so most of the time we knew what stress was he in, but then what can my old parents and 3 sisters do to help?

I agree we should always have support for our army men.
They protect our country and contribute to the peace, security and stability of Singapore.
But the country is losing strong manpower because young and healthy, able-bodied male citizens go committing suicides. These are great wastages when these can be prevented.

I feel the need for Mindef to quickly review the slow charging procedures when traffic accidents happened and their work efficiency.
And also try to achieve a greater transparency when dealing things in camp.

TOKYO (AFP) - To the untrained ear monkeys of a certain species may all sound the same, but Japanese researchers have found that, like human beings, they actually have an accent depending on where they live.

The finding, the first of its kind, will appear in the December edition of a German scientific journal Ethology to be published on December 5, the primate researchers said Tuesday.
"Differences between chattering by monkeys are like dialects of human beings," said Nobuo Masataka, professor of ethology at Kyoto University's Primate Research Institute.

The research team analyzed voice tones of two groups of the same species of primates, the Japanese Yakushima macaque also known as Macaca fuscata yakui, between 1990 and 2000.
One group was formed by 23 monkeys living on the southern Japanese island of Yakushima, and the other group comprised 30 descendants from the same tribe moved from the island to Mount Ohira, central Japan, in 1956.

The result showed that the island group had a tone about 110 hertz higher on average than the one taken to central Japan.

Monkeys on Yakushima Island have an accent with a higher tone because tall trees on the island tend to block their voice, Masataka said.
"On the other hand, monkeys on Mount Ohira do not have to gibber with a high tone as trees there are low," he said. "Each group adopted their own accent depending upon their environment."

This suggests differences in voice tones are not caused by genes, Masataka said, adding the results "may lead to a clue to the origin of human language."
